Vidya Balan starrer ‘Dirty Picture’ was stalled from being telecasted on Sony TV at the last moment. The movie went through about 59 cuts to attain a UA certificate by the censor board and was still not allowed to be telecasted. Film’s director Milan Luthria was raged by this act. He was unhappy that despite editing the bold scenes and attaining the UA certificate the film was not allowed to be telecasted at the prime time. Filmmaker Karan Johar wrote on his twitter account that this act was plain hypocrisy.

This action does make a lot of us think about the kind of democracy we have where a director cannot telecast his movie he is being barred from enjoying his right to express. Dirty Picture is a national award winning film and Karan Johar says that not telecasting a national award winning film to the nation is not irony but hypocrisy. Even actor Tushar Kapoor who played a role in the movie expressed his disappointment through his twitter account. The movie was a hit at the box office and won critical acclaim. Vidya Balan’s performance was appreciated a lot and the role of the southern actress Silk Smitha that she played was called her best performance. After all the success and acceptance it received from the audience the stalling of the film’s premier was totally unexpected. The Dirty Picture premier controversy is doing rounds since the day it was cancelled. Luthria said in one of his interviews that they had followed the rules and cut the bold scenes for the last two months they had been preparing for the premier but the Information and broadcast ministry officials in New Delhi asked the Sony channel to only telecast the movie after 11pm. The Dirty Picture Premier controversy as we have begun to call it has disappointed the director as he expresses his hurt in his interviews. None of the other actors or even Sony TV that bought the movie’s rights at Rs. 8 crore have said anything about this controversy.

The Dirty Picture Premier controversy has made many of us think and question the right to expression we have. Ultimately the noose is tightening around Ravi Rishi, the said businessman as the CBI has issued restraint order against him and has also impounded his passport preventing him from leaving the country.

According to reports the businessman is under the CBI radar as he used his knowledge of Tatra’s poor financial status in the 1980s and used his connections in India to make better Tatra deal. This involved extracting low prices from the manufacturer, as the company was struggling at that time and used it in his favor. The Tatra- BEML(Bharat Earth Movers Limited) deal violates the rule that Indian defence contracts are required to be direct deals between supplier and India. In this case, the deal was struck with an intermediary, the Vectra Group, which is tainted even given Vectra Group’s organic links with Tatra. And this had lead to the fallout.

It is suspected in fact that Ravi Rishi could be arrested in the near future for his actions as his properties were raided and documents concerning the controversial Tatra deal were recovered. The investigation into the case is all set to widen, given that the parties involved range from Vectra company officials, officials in the defence ministry and the public sector defence utility BEML.
